Afrikana CIC Marks Mitzvah Day with Community Service, Youth Engagement and Anti-Hate Education

Afrikana CIC proudly hosted a series of Mitzvah Day activities over the weekend, bringing together young people, community partners and local leaders for a programme centred on learning, compassion and community cohesion.

The weekend began with an anti-hate and positivity workshop delivered by Lucy Allan from The Anne Frank Trust UK, supported by Afrikana CEO, Cynthia Waggah. The session provided young people with practical tools to challenge hate crime, promote understanding and encourage positive behaviours within their communities. Youth Councillor Chris W, from Cumberland Youth Voice, participated in the workshop and engaged with the Trust’s peer educators, reflecting on the ongoing relevance of Anne Frank’s story and how these lessons can inform local youth initiatives.

In the spirit of Mitzvah Day’s commitment to service, Cynthia partnered with other stakeholders who joined children and Shayla from Groundworks to prepare warm meals. The activity offered hands-on experience in community care and highlighted the power of collective action.

Young people from West Lakes Academy also took part in the day’s activities, contributing to discussions and learning opportunities focused on kindness, responsibility and active citizenship. Many expressed interest in joining the region’s newly established Youth Engagement Groups, designed to elevate youth voices across Cumberland.

Afrikana CIC extends its appreciation to all partners who supported the weekend, including Rabbi Jonathan and all contributors.
