Civic Leaders Visit Afrikana Centre to Celebrate Diversity and Community Partnership
On 17 February 2026, Afrikana CIC had the distinct honour of welcoming the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Charter Trustees of Cumberland Council to the Afrikana Centre for a meaningful engagement centred on community, diversity and shared growth.
The visit provided an opportunity for open and enriching dialogue on the value of immigration and the powerful role diverse cultures play in strengthening communities. Conversations highlighted how inclusion enriches social life, fosters innovation and creates space for collective progress.
Afrikana CIC CEO Cynthia Waggah shared the organisation’s core mandate: curating events and activities that bring people together to celebrate diversity, deepen understanding and build authentic connections. At its heart, Afrikana is committed to providing a safe, welcoming space where culture is honoured, stories are exchanged and lasting community bonds are formed.

The discussion also reflected on the origins of Afrikana CIC; born from curiosity and a desire to integrate meaningfully into a new environment while embracing new experiences without losing one’s identity. That journey continues to shape the Centre’s mission and impact today.
The visit marked an important step in strengthening relationships with civic leadership, with shared optimism for continued collaboration in building a more inclusive and united community for all.
