Afrikana Bridge: One Community, Many Voices

This is a new 12-month community cohesion project designed to strengthen relationships, promote integration and reduce racial inequalities in our local area.

The project is supported by The National Lottery Community Fund in partnership with Afrikana CIC.

Building on the Afrikana Centre’s experience in delivering cultural events and youth engagement programmes, this initiative creates safe, inclusive spaces where people from different backgrounds can meet, learn from one another and collaborate.

Through cultural exchange evenings, storytelling circles, creative arts programmes, youth mentorship, dialogue workshops and wellbeing activities, we are bringing people together to celebrate differences while building shared belonging.

Our aim is simple but powerful: one community, many voices – heard, valued and connected.

Cultural Exchange Nights 2026

A key part of the programme is our Cultural Nights Series, vibrant evenings where communities share food, dance, language and traditions.

Each event creates space for cultural pride, curiosity and mutual understanding.

  • πŸ“… East African Night – 14th March
  • πŸ“… West African Night – 18th April
  • πŸ“… English Cultural Night – 23rd May
  • πŸ“… South African Night – 27th June
  • πŸ“… North African Night – 18th July
  • πŸ“… Caribbean Night – 22nd August

These evenings are more than celebrations. They are opportunities to exchange stories, challenge stereotypes and build genuine relationships across communities

Constructive Dialogues and Youth Engagement

Alongside our cultural events, Afrikana Bridge includes:

  • Structured dialogue workshops
  • Intergenerational storytelling sessions
  • Youth mentorship and leadership development
  • Creative arts and expression programmes
  • Wellbeing and peer-support activities

Young people, families and marginalised groups will benefit directly, gaining confidence, skills and opportunities for civic engagement.

We are particularly focused on creating safe spaces for constructive conversations around identity, belonging and racial inequality, ensuring that young voices are not only heard but empowered.

Building Stronger Communities

Afrikana Bridge responds directly to local needs.

Over the past year, we have engaged with more than 150 residents through coffee mornings, youth groups, cultural events and informal conversations. The message was clear:

  • People want safe spaces to connect.
  • Young people want leadership opportunities.
  • Communities want stronger relationships across differences.

This project brings those aspirations together.

By offering accessible, low-cost activities during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, we aim to reduce isolation, strengthen social networks and build community resilience.

A Vibrant Community Hub

All activities will take place at the Afrikana Centre, a trusted and welcoming space at the heart of our community.

Through fortnightly events and sustained engagement, we are working to:

  • Build strong relationships across communities
  • Improve a space that matters deeply to local residents
  • Support people at an early stage to reach their potential
  • Create a lasting model for reducing racial inequalities

Monitoring and Sustainability

We will monitor impact through:

  • Attendance tracking
  • Participant feedback
  • Surveys and focus groups
  • Ongoing community consultation

This learning will guide adjustments and ensure the project remains inclusive, relevant and impactful.

Afrikana Bridge is not a one-off initiative- it is the beginning of a sustained, community-led movement towards deeper connection and shared belonging.
