South Luangwa National Park, located in eastern Zambia’s Luangwa River Valley, is one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries and an iconic destination for immersive safaris. Covering an area of about 9,050 square kilometers, the park is bordered by the meandering Luangwa River, whose oxbow lagoons and lush floodplains attract some of the continent’s most spectacular concentrations of wildlife.
At the heart of the park lies the Mfuwe sector, the most accessible area, where visitors enter through Mfuwe Gate. Here, the Luangwa River is often teeming with hippos, sometimes packed shoulder to shoulder, grunting and jostling for space in the cooling waters. Crocodiles sunbathe on the riverbanks, and thirsty animals gather in the heat of the day for a life-sustaining drink.
South Luangwa is celebrated for its rich woodland savannah, characterized by acacia, mahogany, and baobab trees, along with sweeping open plains. These diverse habitats support over 60 species of mammals and more than 400 bird species, making it a haven for both safari-goers and birdwatchers. Visitors may spot massive herds of elephants moving silently through the bush, buffalo, zebra, and the park’s most famous resident—the Thornicroft’s giraffe, a rare and endemic subspecies found nowhere else in the world.
One of the park’s greatest attractions is its walking safaris, a concept pioneered here in the 1960s by conservationist Norman Carr. These intimate, guided treks allow visitors to explore the bush on foot, offering a deeper connection to the environment and the thrill of tracking animals without the barrier of a vehicle.
As night falls, night drives begin—another highlight of South Luangwa. Using red-filtered spotlights, guides help visitors spot nocturnal predators such as leopards, which are unusually abundant in the park. Seeing one of these elusive cats stalking prey under the cover of darkness is an unforgettable experience. Other night-time sightings may include civets, genets, bush babies, and even porcupines.
The park’s safari lodges and bush camps, many located along the river, blend luxury with wilderness. Trails from these accommodations wind through scenic landscapes where guests may encounter wildlife on their doorstep—literally. It’s not uncommon for elephants to pass through lodge grounds or for hippos to graze nearby at night.
